Which are the Off Peak Moving Days?

There are certain times of the year, and even days of the week, where you will be charged more by a moving company. You can cut your moving costs down considerably by knowing what these days are in advance and planning for them ahead of time. Moving is a big and expensive undertaking, and finding anyway to shave dollars off of the final cost will be extremely helpful when you need money for curtains in your new home.

Best Times of the Year to Move

In terms of charges to you, moving in the winter will save you the most money. July 1st is traditionally the biggest moving day of the year and July and August the busiest months. If possible, try and plan your move for anywhere between November and March, when the rates will drop significantly.

When scheduling a winter move, keep the various holidays in mind. It is likely that some moving companies are going to be closed for business for a number of days during November and December.

Best Days of the Month to Move

Not surprisingly, moving company rates are also at their highest on the last week of the month and first couple of days. This coincides with the typical rental lease. The 15th of the month is also busier for those renters who started their leases in the middle of the month.

If you are renting, ask your landlord to allow you to stay 2 or 3 days beyond or lease. If you are moving to another rental, you can ask to move in a few days before the lease begins. This may or may not be possible depending on the plans of any current tenant who is renting the space.

Best Days of the Week to Move

If you are planning a move in the near future, start saving some personal time at work. The busiest days of the week, and therefore most expensive, to move are Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Moving Monday through Thursday will save you a considerable amount of money with the moving company.

One thing to consider for local moves where you are paying by the hour, is your local traffic. Plan for the movers to arrive after morning rush hour to avoid having to pay more for a truck and movers who are stuck in bumper to bumper traffic.

Take a local moving company for example, where you are typically being charged by the hour. Moving on a Saturday as opposed to Tuesday can cost you an additional $50. That’s enough to cover your take-out for your first night in a new house.

You can save a substantial amount of money if you are able to plan your move around the relocation peak times. When getting your quotes from different movers, be flexible in your moving date and you will find that a weekday in the first half of the month is cheaper then a Saturday at its end.
